Few Caribbean islands are as inviting as Bonaire, a sand-fringed escape in the former Dutch Antilles. Just 30 miles from the island of Curaçao, 50 miles from Venezuela, and set along the waterfront in Kralendijk, the island’s tiny capital, Piet Boon Bonaire is a collection of nine individually styled villas. Four of these are right on the beachfront, with ultra-spacious and expertly crafted living spaces leading out onto private terraces, which have cool pools and easy access to the sea. Five additional villas sit further back from the shore but just like the beachfront properties, they are unmistakably the work of Dutch design icon Piet Boon.
Piet Boon’s connection with Bonaire runs deep. “For me,” he says, “Bonaire is the picture you see when you close your eyes and dream of the Caribbean.” Politically and economically, the Caribbean island remains a part of his native Netherlands, and is one of the most environmentally conscious atolls in the region – something which tallies well with Piet’s love of authenticity and natural materials.
Additionally, the property now offers a tailor-made, barefoot luxury experience for those seeking a healthy lifestyle and signature design at an affordable price. Three on-property villas now make up The Boon House and function as a B&B with a stocked honesty fridge, colorful hammocks in the garden, resident guitar players at happy hour, and catch-of-the-day BBQs all part of the experience.
Architecture in the Caribbean Sun
Like the traditional cunucu houses on the island, the houses are designed to benefit from the wind. This ensures that it is cooled in a natural way. Shutters temper the wind, which allows for the ultimate enjoyment of the outdoor life.Although they were designed individually by a Dutch master craftsman, the nine sophisticated villas at Piet Boon Bonaire share many of the same elegant design traits. Natural materials and subdued shades help to ensure a sense of continuity between the villas, the private gardens and their thatched gazebos, which have unforgettable views over the sparkling Caribbean Sea.
